A Reusable Garment Bag Ad States, "the simple step of switching (to this reusable garment bag) will help to reduce the estimated 300 million pounds of single-use plastic drycleaning bags a year that continue to clog our landfills and kill our marine and wildlife."
NOT TRUE.
David Laist, a senior policy analyst with the federal Marine Mammal Commission, stated: "In their eagerness to make their case (against plastic bags), some of the environmental groups, make up claims that are not really supportable."
As a result of misinformation, some people believe that plastic bags "clog up" landfills.
NOT TRUE. According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, plastic bags (including retail, grocery store, and garment bags) uses up only 0.3% of land fill space. Plastic garment bags make up a very small percent of this figure.
As a result of misinformation, many people believe that plastic bags kill 100,000 sea mammals and one million seabirds each year. The media is relentlessly spreading this misinformation. The San Jose Mercury News recently stated in an editorial: "Plastic bags kill an estimated 1 million seabirds and 100,000 other animals every year, whether from eating the things or gtetting tangled in them." NOT TRUE
The London Times has exposed this as a myth based on a typographical error! The report on which the myth is based mentioned discarded fishing tackle including fishing nets, not plastic bags. David Santillo, a marine biologist at Greenpeace, told The Times: "It's very unlikely that many animals are killed by plastic bags."
As a result of misinformation, some people believe that plastic bags are not recycable. NOT TRUE Special plastic bag recycling bins have been installed in large super markets, retail stores, and drycleaners throughout the country, or bags can be taken to your local recycling center or returned to the manufacture. Virtually all of the plastic bags deposited in those bins are actually recycled and made into new plastic, plastic bags or composite lumber. Nationwide over 855 million pounds of bags and film were recycled in 2009 - up 31% from 2005.
As a result of misinformation, some people believe that plastic bags are made of oil. NOT TRUE They are made of ethane which is a waste ptoduct from domestically produced natural gas. If the ethane is not used to make plastic bags, it will have to be burned off. About 85% of plastic bags used in the U.S.A. are made in the U.S.A.
As a result of misinformation, some people believe that paper bags are better for the environment than plastic bags. NOT TRUE Paper bags result in between 2.0 - 3.3 times more greenhouse gases than plastic bags.
As a result of misinformation, some people believe that items labeled or stated to be "green" are. Questionable.
An editoral in the London Times states: "There is a danger that the green herd, in pursuit of a good cause, stumbles into misguided campaigns .... Analysis without facts is guesswork. Sloppy analysis of bad science is worse. Poor interpretation of good science wastes time and impedes the flight against obnoxious behavior. There is no place for bad science, or weak analysis, in search for credible answers to difficult questions ....
Many of those who have demonized plastic bags have enlisted scientific study to their cause. By exaggerating a grain of truth into a larger falsehood, they spread misinformation and abuse the trust of their unwitting audiences."
Reusable Garment Bag Ads state "that they protect the cloths better, are safer, are so much better for the environment, save drycleaners thousands, are water proof, are water-resistant, breathable, better, much safer, cheaper." Well - Let's See.

Looking into the Reusable Garment Bags. Can't do it - Most Reusable Garment Bags are made of a solid total opaque cotton, nylon or non woven polypropylene material making it impossible to see the cleaned garments enclosed within. The Marketing of your cleaning skills stays hidden within the Reusable Bag.
Taking dirty clothes to your Dry Cleaner in the Reusable Garment Bag (now a dirty hamper bag) makes it necessary for the Drycleaner to not only clean your clothes, but also to clean the Reusable Garment Bag. Some Reusable Garment Bags that are not or cannot be effectively cleaned on a regular basis, can actually have a negative effect on human health and the environment, due to bacterial growth. Many Reusable Garment Bags require hand washing if you really wish for them to be clean, which is a very time-consuming process for the Dry Cleaner or the Bag Owner.
Most Reusable Bags are manufactured and imported from China. Many Reusable Prolpropylene Bags from China have been found to contain high levels of lead, mercury and other heavy metals. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) has recently called for a federal investigation into toxic materials in reusable bags. Questions have also been raised as to whether ot not the lead could be spread in landfills when the bags are discarded.
Some Reusable Garment Bags that wear out quickly also take up space in landfills. Most Reusable Garment Bags are not biodegradable or compostable, and with all the different materials used in the construction of the Reusable Polypropylene Garment Bags (zippers, Drawstring closures, See-though front pockets, etc. etc.) makes trying to recycle some of the Reusable Polypropylene Garment Bags a very expensive nightmare at best, and may not be economically possible at all. Tom Croarkin from Earth Talk states, "Regarding #5 Polypropylene, few municipal
recycling centers will accept it due to its very low rate of recyclability."
Earlier last year a Government Environment Agency published a life cycle assessment of plastic, paper, and reusable bags."The study confirms that the reusable bags are not inherently better for the environment than plastic bags. Reusable bags have to be used a tremendous number of times to provide an environmental benefit to conventional plastic carryout bags. The reality is that huge numbers of reusable bags are being thrown away before they are used the requisite amount of times (they wear out). Reusable bags have other critically important issues
such as the accumulation of potential dangerous bacteria in unwashed bags and heavy metals content in bags that are imported from China. Also, (PP) polypropylene, canvas and cloth bags cannot be recycled while (HDPE) high density polyethylene, (LDPE) low density polyethylene, and paper bags can be recycled."
As the late great former Presdient Ronald Reagan stated, "Trust, But Verify". How true this is, especially with products that are labeled or stated to be "Green".

Let's Talk about Cores - Competitors for years have used 3" I.D. paper cores that have a weight of 2 to 5 pounds.
In 1993 we came out wirh a 3" I.D. Plastic Core with a weight of just one (1) pound. In 2012 we phased out these 3" I.D. (1) pound plastic cores and began implementing a 1" I.D. (1/2) pound plastic PVC core.
Using the same size box that we have used from day one - we have increased our roll weight from 32 pounds to 35 pounds and the number of useable bags per roll.
In terms of cost per bag, you will be getting a 1/2 pound MORE of usable poly per carton weight. This new 1" plastic PVC core allows for perfect dispensing without the need for any end plugs.
But, the biggest advantage our cores has over paper is its weight, its strength and the fact that it will not rot or absorb water or smell of mildew.
